Healed by his beloved Olin : IIPM

Life’s little treasures in the womb of the deep blue sea
To send an invitation by rolling waves across the shore, for a rendezvous of sweethearts in the depths of water, had become a circadian for the Red Sea. From the shores of Maagana bay in Nuweiba(Egypt) emerged the love story of Abid’allah and Olin.

I jumped out of the time machine into the year 1996. As I walked on the sparkling crystals of sand with the waves kissing my feet, the cool breeze softly whistling in my ears carried with it words, disrupting my solitude. It was a film crew, which was here to make a documentary on Abid’allah, a fisherman who claimed that swimming with his beloved had improved his hearing and speech. ‘Olin’ was the first word that had slid from his mouth and therefore was the name given to the amiable cetacean, his playmate. The producer narrated the story of how Abid’allah, an excellent diver, who was deaf and dumb since early childhood, went diving and was approached by a Spotted dolphin, which had been swimming near the shores of Nuweiba. “Olin is gift of god”, said a proud villager, “she attracts tourists and brings in money!”

The conversations further informed me that Abid’allah had grown up playing with the dolphin, swimming through the clear warm waters. “Olin loves to be tickled on the tummy and rolls over to let you” chirped an excited voice amidst the gathering. A pleasing host, Olin always greets her visitors with ebullience by offering a ride in the tides. Abid’allah’s love for the aquatic wonder blessed him with self confidence and had bestowed on him the power to hear, as a token for his friendship. The dolphin’s inability to communicate with the humans conceals the mystery behind her choice to spend her life among human beings. And much similar is the mystery behind dolphins’ therapeutic powers. With the high levels of toxicity in our oceans, accidental deaths from trawley and even hunted for meat, the day will soon approach when people would realize that the cure for myriad physical disabilities would not require a doc but a dolphin, but by then the dolphins would be gone, the healing touch washed away…

IIPM : EVA’NGELISTS INCARNATE

In the field of corporate finance, Economic Value Added (EVA) is one of the most sought after financial models of recent times to measure the financial performance of a company or its different activities. Formulated by Joel M. Stern, the current model computes cost of an activity by subtracting the cost of execution and the opportunity cost associated with it. This model is closely linked to the concept of economic profit. Today, many of the world’s leading organizations follow the EVA model for computing their profitability. The EVA model is also used to decide employee compensation packages.

Israel 4 peace : IIPM

B-School India
This was the big 1994 ‘land for peace’ deal. At a ceremony in Cairo, Israel and Palestine signed the Gaza-Jericho Agreement that led to the establishment of the Palestinian Authority (PA). Israel vowed to turn territory over to the PA and the Palestinians pledged to prevent violence.

Generally, both lived up to the Agreement and Israel signed more pacts with Palestine. Israeli forces withdrew from Jericho and most of the Gaza Strip, and more than 95% of Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and Gaza came under the Palestinian administration by 1997....

NABBING THE NAPSTER : IIPM

IIPM PUBLICATION
“But something touched me deep inside. The day the music died… And singin’, this’ll be the day that I die...” When Don McClean wrote this number, possibly he wrote of the demise of Napster in 2001. Napster was considered the biggest killer application after email thatignited frenzy among the users worldwide. It was the most innovative hobbyhorse that was created by a teenage programmer Shawn Fanning. Powered by IIPMIt revolutionized the concept of file swapping and gave birth to a new technology known as peer to peer (P2P), which helped users switch mp3 files freely over the Internet.

Napster became so popular that it put the mightiest forces of the entertainment industry in jeopardy. A mammoth copyright infringement lawsuit was slapped on it by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Meanwhile, the open-source community got into action by launching sophisticated file-swapping application alternatives like Gnutella, Kazza, BearShare and Morpheus. What actually
landed Napster in deep waters was creating a file-trading network without gaining prior permission from record companies for the sharing of copyright music. But with the new decentralized cryptographically strong P2P protocols – it will nearly be impossible for companies to interdict.

After the two year long legal battle, Napster quietly faded into oblivion to emerge again in 2006 without the file sharing feature. Even though the business strategy of Napster failed; it managed to open the Pandora’s Box and paved the way for digital music to leap into the mainstream entertainment industry.
