ET Now

It’s time it’s now... et now: With the backing of the largest read business daily in India – The Economic Times, Bennett, Coleman & Co. went a step ahead and launched the much-awaited ET Now in the country in June 2009. The channel took no time in making a space for itself in the already crowded business news channel arena. It’s only been a few months that this broadcaster has hit the idiot box but it is already giving a tough fight to players like CNBC TV 18, NDTV Profit, Bloomberg-UTV, et al. But will it be able to repeat the success of The Economic Times on the idiot box? 2010 will surely have a better answer to that.

SBI has introduced a new facility in mobile banking

IIPM makes record 10,000 placements in five years

Even the public sector behemoth SBI is not far behind when it comes to offer mobile banking. Lately, SBI has introduced a new facility in mobile banking wherein central government employees receiving payments through SBI will receive the details of their transactions through mobile phones.

So, while HDFC and SBI are banking on Eko, banks like Dena Bank, Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank, Punjab and Sind Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, United Bank of India, et al are banking on A Little World’s (another technology provider) “ZERO” platform to reach to the customers.

Increasing competition has even prompted telecom service providers to move ahead of telecommunication services. In fact, now they are aiming at partnering with banks to provide mobile banking services to bank customers. Bharti Airtel, for instance, has entered into agreements with ICICI, HDFC, SBI, and VISA to offer mobile money transfer (MMT), postpaid bill payment, and prepaid recharge services in addition to ticketing services for air, rail, and movies. Likewise, Reliance allows ICICI Bank account holders with Reliance handsets (even on low-end handsets of Rs.1,000, with or without Internet connectivity) to make intrabank money transfers. Apart from this, it has also tied up with HDFC to offer Reliance mPay, a virtual credit card.

No doubt, mobile banking happens to be the buzz word with every single banker in India at present, but whether it will emerge as a clear successor of e-banking will depend on how customers across the country accept and acclimatise to this new banking channel. “Increasing mobile penetration cannot be the only indicator that mobile banking will slowly and steadily increase acceptance. However, factors like technological advancement in terms of software applications and service offerings, user-friendly products and services, security concerns, and last but not least, regulatory norms will play a pivotal role in the growth of mobile banking in any country,” states Rajan.

But who knows, with banks looking adamant on developing a more user friendly interface for their customers, mobile might soon become a popular tool for conducting financial transactions. And Pathak, who is today furiously clicking the keyboard of his laptop for transferring funds from his one account to another, might tomorrow be happily doing it through his cell phone!

The child insurance market is highly under-penetrated

Pradeep Pandey, Director (Branding & Comm.), AEGON ReligarePradeep Pandey,
Director (Branding & Comm.), AEGON Religare

4Ps B&M: What has been the impact of “Star Child” ad campagin?
PP:
Our objective was to release a clutter-breaking communication capturing the emotions and aspirations of middle class Indian parents. We have received a tremendous response towards the Star Child campaign. People across age groups have liked the commercial, given the unique style of execution where an 18-month-old child performs expert moves such as an ace footballer and a guitarist.

4Ps B&M: How do you see the market of child insurance?
PP:
The child insurance market is highly under-penetrated, as is the case with life insurance. Every parent wants to build a secure future for their children. This require savings and or investments towards children’s career, education or marriage. AEGON Religare Star Child Plan helps the parent save systematically for their kid. A unique feature in our Child Plan is that in the case of the death of the parent, the child will get the sum assured immediately and all the future premiums will be paid by the insurer. At the end of the policy term, the child will get the fund value as well. The parent also gets the added benefit of tax saving for as long as they pay the premiums.

4Ps B&M: How are you marketing the child insurance policies? Any special strategy that you adapt for the same?
PP:
Our spends for the current Star Child campaign was Rs.8 crore across TV, Print, OOH and Digital medium. TV is the lead medium for us followed by OOH. We will release a complete social media strategy for the child insurance category, among other categories, shortly.

Playing with the audience?

Pioneer Exposes the fraud called Mahesh Sharma and Mahesh Peri of Career 360 and Barbel Schwertfeger of mba-channel.com

Viacom 18’s Nickelodean is gearing up for it’s worldwide event, ‘Let’s Just Play’. The event promotes the importance of active play and outdoor activities in the life of kids. It aims to establish that apart from indoor activities like video games and TV, ‘Active Play’ too is a cool and fashionable thing to do. The idea is to connect with their target audience (kids) at a stronger level. Nestle Milkybar has joined Nick in spreading this awareness message. Hey, but isn’t it like encouraging your audience to spend less time infront of TV? Nina Elavia Jaipuria, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Nick India believes otherwise. “Nick has always been a responsible broadcaster and we strive to go beyond just entertainment. Nick is deeply concerned about the issue of lack of play in the lives of kids and is pulling out all the stops to inspire as many kids and parents as possible.”

LALU BAN GAYA GENTLEMAN

Lalu Prasad Yadav, President, RJD

At a time when ‘Hum Do Hamare Do’ has almost become the national anthem, Lalu Yadav, father of nine, has made himself a top selling political brand – with a national awareness (by playing to the gallery) and great performance (of turning around Indian Railways) across categories (of voters, we mean!).

While for a large part of the so-called ‘intelligentsia’, Lalu’s perceptual transformation came post the turnaround of Indian Railways, for the masses, Lalu’s charisma is not new. They’ve been laughing for years at his Hema Malini jokes, rustic posturing and deliberately cultivated joker-like image, and loving every moment of it. Agrees political commentator, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, “He’s the most astute, media-savvy politician. He’s used the amazingly device of smiling at the people who are laughing at him to emerge as a loved and popular celebtrity.”

Despite his questionable tenure as Bihar’s unquestionable CM and bossman during the 90s, sordid tales about his involvement in the Rs.1,950 crore fodder scam and allegations of nepotism when he propped up wife Rabri as Bihar’s CM, Lalu is one regional politician who has acquired national (even global) stature. Today, he spends his free time addressing hundreds of students from Harvard & Wharton, and has invitations from 8 Ivy League schools for lectures. All this even as rural India continues to sell ‘Lalu’ branded mangoes, firecrackers, dolls, rakhis, chocolates, fodder & even cosmetics! Now how’s that for brand appeal?

By all accounts, even in your year 2009, the answer appears to be a resounding YES! Monojit Lahiri wonders why

The Weaker sex! The Gentler sex! A community given to listen to their heart more than their head; driven by sentiment and emotion, instead of logic and analysis; excited by the colour pink or some floral motif to go for it without a second thought … these are some of the ‘perceived’ notions of marketers across the globe while targeting women. Which world are they living in? A recent US survey has indicated that women today drive the world economy! Globally, they are said to control about $20 trillion in annual consumer spending, a figure that could zoom north to touch $28 trillion by 2014! Also, their $13 trillion in yearly earnings could hit the $18 trillion mark in the same period. The survey further adds that, in sheer aggregate terms, women represent a growth curve bigger than India and China combined … Despite this, it states how dumbly – and chauvinistically – computer titan Dell wooed the female consumer by its soft-sell, make-it-pink drive. The communication went consciously ‘girly’ emphasising colours, accessories and tips for finding recipes and counting calories. The response was an unanimous and spontaneous protest against “talking down in condescending, dumb-down fashion” to a target group that deserved better … Immediately, damage control and correction course measures darted into action – but the point is: why was this potentially awkward positioning triggered, in the first place? The reason is simple. The phrase “It’s a man’s world” is so deeply ingrained in the male marketer’s psyche that they believe they can get away with any and every thing. Unfortunately, this thinking today must be dumped in the ‘fiction’ area; the truth lies elsewhere. It lies in the simple fact that today’s (male) marketers need to ‘learn’ how to sell to women.

In 2008, a hi-profile, professional consulting group did a comprehensive study of how women felt about their work, lives and how they were being served by businesses. The responses would wake the dead! Generally speaking, they felt hugely undeserved and despite their quantum leaps in the professional and social space, they felt undervalued in the market place and underestimated in the work place. Their multi-tasking is there for all to see, but few marketers have bothered to respond to manufacturing time-saving solutions for products and services specifically designed for them. For example, it is still so difficult to locate a pair of trousers get solid financial advice without feeling foolish, or patronised. Companies continue to offer them poorly conceived products and services and obsolete, irrelevant, outdated marketing narratives that promote gender bias and stereotypes. Examples? Cars are designed for speed not utility, which really matters to woman. Heard – or seen – an SUV built to accommodate a mom who needs to load her two kids into it? Then there was the recent ad for Bounty Paper towels where a husband and son stand, watching a spill cross the room, until mom comes charging and happily cleans up the mess!

SAFFOLA LIFE - MADISON MEDIA INFINITY

Exclusive In chat with Society Magazine - Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri

GOAL:
To create maximum awareness for Saffola Life’s free Cholesterol test offer to ascertain heart disease risk levels in Mumbai.

STRATEGY: Drawing a parallel with the radio – just like the heart, radio too can only be heard and not seen. A week before World Heart Day 08’, RJs aired announcements saying that they were sacrificing their ‘sound’ for the sake of Mumbai’s heart.

THE IDEA: The execution would see Mumbai’s top radio stations simultaneously go without music, ads & strangely, even RJ chit-chat – playing just the sound of a beating heart.

ONE-HOUR BEAT: On World Health Day on September 28, 2008, at 10 AM, all the six FM stations in Mumbai initiated the campaign and 10 minutes later simultaneously started playing the ‘heartbeat’ for over half an hour, which gave the listeners an opportunity to ‘Listen to their Heart’. The one-hour program ended at 11 AM. For those 30 minutes, the radio personified the heart of every listener.

EFFECTIVENESS: 1.17 million listeners not only tuned in to the broadcast but also listened to the heart beat for 18 minutes on an average. It garnered more than 22,000 SMSs for cholesterol tests and generated 93% top-of-mind awareness for Saffola Life’s association with World Heart Day, strengthening the brand’s equity on heart care.

Of broken wings & unmet dreams

IIPM 3-year full-time Integrated (MBA BBA) Programme

Many of these institutes have diversified. Their courseware now offers more than just training for aspiring cabin crews. For one, they are extending their soft-skill training and grooming sessions to polish management executives from many corporate houses. “We have tied up with a number of business houses to train and polish their employees to acquaint them and develop in them various interpersonal skills,” confirms Pammi Talwar, Chairperson, Inflight Air Hostess Training Institute (IAHTI). The good news is that these training sessions are proving to be a rather lucrative business, as corporates are beginning to understand the need to inculcate such interpersonal and soft skills in their employees. Kohli of Frankfinn is also planning along similar lines as he affirms, “We are re-launching our corporate training division by the name Frankfinn Corporate Cell, in November 2009. This division would specialise in imparting soft-skill lessons not only to the top managers, but also to employees at lower levels...”

There is more. With the increasing demand for various management courses, some of these air hostess training institutes have also started imparting management courses at both the bachelors and masters levels through distance learning courses, which are affiliated to various open universities. Courses such as management in hotel, hospitality and travel have also been introduced by many of these institutes. “We have recently started our distance learning MBA and BBA programs affiliated to the Global Open University of Nagaland,” states Talwar of IAHTI. All this diversification in the course content would definitely help these niche players to cater to a wider audience but the catch is that there are already a number of institutes which specialise in the above-mentioned courses, and unless these institutes succeed in eroding market share of the established management institutes, the future will only get more hopeless.

However, there is still hope that the future may not yet become a reverie for these crew planners, with the trajectory of both the economy and the aviation sector (air traffic registered a 26% y-o-y growth during August 2009) looking upwards. Moreover players like SpiceJet, Paramount Airways and IndiGo have unleashed fleet expansion plans, thus opening new opportunities for the prospective in-flight crew members. “As per DGCA, it is mandatory for airlines to have a certain number of cabin crew per flight. Thus the various expansion plans would once again encourage the students to pursue their flying dreams,” supports Kohli.

All said and done, for now the idea of course diversification seems to be the best bet for these air hostess training institutes in the country. Their journey into the skies may not yet be over, but for once, fortune has taught them how realistic things on the ground are... (Wonder if they were ever groomed for such a change!)

NRIs are passé!

IIPM 3-year full-time Integrated (MBA BBA) Programme

One of my friends was obsessed with the dream of a rich and handsome NRI who’d take her to America. On contacting her recently, Divya’s response was an absolute surprise. “No way! Don’t you know about the amount of lay-offs that have happened due to recession? If people are losing their jobs there, how do you expect me to find one?! Moreover, what’s wrong with our Indian men? In fact, I’d prefer getting married to someone from the same city so that my life and job is not disturbed,” she said. And what if the guy finds a better job elsewhere after marriage? Without batting an eyelid, Divya explained, “After marriage, it all depends on you and your partner’s understanding. One would have to do what’s best for both. And adjustment is important.” Another reason that has added to the unpopularity of an NRI groom, especially in arranged marriages, is the rise in the number of cases of the girl being duped after being taken abroad, and so even giving NRI a new meaning – ‘Non-reliable Indian’! “There have been many such cases and yes, that slight bit of uncertainty has frightened girls from crossing the border,” expounded Dipankar Chakravarthy.

India has witnessed an economic boom in the past and career opportunities are aplenty on this soil too. Moreover, girls these days refuse to part with their family and friends. So, parents who are seeking a suitable groom should rejoice at this new trend, for their daughters are now more likely to stay close to them. And those lamenting about this change in mind-set, it’s perhaps best to let your daughter decide what’s best for her!

One of the most upcoming brands, Safexpress has been driving the warehousing revolution in India, having envisaged that warehousing would be the major growth area in the industry for many years to come. Safexpress has totally redefined the way supply chain functions in the country today. The comeback brand Fiat India laid the first successful milestone in Fiat’s third attempt to win in India by launching Fiat Linea earlier this year. Though experts had argued that an expensive sedan like Linea may not be able to get desired results for Fiat, the company proved all of them wrong, by managing to sell around 6,500 units of Linea despite a weak market.

Companies of a lesser God?

IIPM is A World of Career

Here’s how CSR initiatives help create stronger & more sustainable companies?

Taiba is an eight year old girl from Delhi and apart from being born in a deprived family, she was born with cataract in her eyes. She could not walk alone, recognise her school books and was left to suffer a life of perennial darkness. Ishratra, her mother, was also totally helpless, especially when the local public school teacher said that Taiba should go to the blind school, instead of a general public school. “I didn’t know what to say, for as she was not totally blind, the blind school won’t accept her admission. Then I came to the camp organised by Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH) and they said they will bear the cost of the operation of my daughter,” reminisces Ishratra. SCEH indeed took the initiative and the operation was funded by McDonald’s. Now Taiba can walk alone and holding a McDonald’s balloon, told this magazine that “I want to become a doctor.” But when asked whether she know what’s written on the balloon, she said no. Taiba might not know about Ronaldo or Big Mac, nor does Ishratra, but every year the quick service restaurant donates Rs.5 lakhs to SCEH. “They also sponsor and manage other buildings like our children ward and promote eye awareness programmes,” adds Arun K. Arora, CEO of SCEH.

Although she claims to be 10 years old, but the curse of hunger and poverty makes her look years older than her age. She can’t afford two meals a day and even thinking about a woollen garment in winter is a luxury for her. But last year Kanta managed to get a woollen sweater and shawl as she was part of the Godrej Ezee ‘Rahaat – Ek Abhyaan’ campaign. And this year too she has come to the Rotary International Club, Chanakyapuri, to collect woollen garments for her brother. “Winters are warmer now, as I have got rid of my old, torn shawl and saab (the coordinating manager) has given me a new, red shawl. I’m here to get another one for my brother,” says Kanta. The girl may be homeless, making a bedroom under any flyover of the capital, but she thanks Godrej for taking the initiative to distribute old woollen clothing to several children of a lesser God.

Pratapgarh, an otherwise non-descript small town in Chittorgarh district is in the midst of rapid transformation. Owing to some landmark initiatives by ITC in rainwater drainage and harvesting, the desert fields of Pratapgarh are producing wheat for the first time. “Nobody could have ever though that Rajasthan can produce wheat also. Without disturbing the ecological harmony, rainwater harvesting has increased the economic condition of these villages and at the same time the villagers will know that ITC is doing good for them,” so said B. K. Sharma, Team Leader of Foundation for Ecological Security, an NGO that’s working with ITC in these districts.

The above may be different incidents happening in different corners of the country, but these are not a part of a suddenly developed penchants by India Inc. It is certainly heartening, how quite a few Indian corporates are playing their part in social initiatives. On the plank of social ethics and morality, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an initiative being taken by almost all the blue eyed boys of India Inc.

Explains Adi Godrej, Chairman, Godrej Group of Companies, “We as a corporation believe that when our entire business is based on society, we can’t ignore our responsibility to the society. If we are building customers, then it becomes crucial to return to the society by taking care of the unprivileged.” A noble cause indeed and it’s not only Adi Godrej, who is taking societal responsibilities seriously. Sunil Mittal, Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani and others of their ilk, even MNCs in India are making sure that they contribute to the society. Vikram Bakshi, MD, McDonald’s India (North & East Region) points out, “We believe in the importance of giving back to the community that has given us so much. We continue to be committed to being a conscientious corporate citizen through our CSR programmes.” This QSR, from the country of Uncle Sam, has funded enormous projects like SCEH, SOS Children’s Villages and over 390 economically and visually challenged children have benefited from vision correction thanks to Big Mac’s efforts in India.

Of course, minting moolah for themselves and their shareholders will always remain their priority number one, but corporates are increasingly evincing an interest in taking care of society and the country. And here’s the million dollar question. Do such initiatives help them to promote their brand? Or does it help give a ‘good’ touch to their organisation in the eyes of the masses? “CSR does not promote a brand and its effect can never be visible in the profit & loss account of a company. Neither does it help when a company is caught for unfair practices, But it does help them re-emerge from their lost position,” explains Sumeet Budhraja, Analyst, Edelweiss Securities. No wonder, the cola behemoths that have been battered by criticism for damaging the ground water and ecosystem in India, are now taking increased interest in protecting the environment. PepsiCo has a waste management programme and Coca Cola has several water preservation projects. Coca Cola’s partnership with Central Groundwater Authority (CGWA) has worked well in preserving water levels in villages near Jaipur.

Explains, Venkatesh Kini, Vice President – Marketing, Coca Cola India, “We have taken several such initiatives earlier also and will be doing it in future too. But we never claim that we have done great CSR, instead we want to convey to people that we care for the society and that has been a part of our corporate campaign also. If you’re doing business in a country, you can’t ignore the people and environment of that country.”

As Kini points out, CSR plays a role in overall corporate objectives, as a better society means greater future market potential. After all, experts say that the larger the gap between ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’, the greater are the chances for an unsustainable economy and therefore business environment. Globally, there’s growing acceptance of CSR initiatives in helping create admired brands. The trend has caught on in India also, much to the benefit of the not-so-shining, ‘other India’.

Cup of ‘wows’ overflows...

...as infrastructure tops the charts

The$320 billion awaits in the infrastructure space, what else!!! flavour of the season is ‘core sector funds’. Fund houses seem to have made infrastructure their theme, with Lotus and Kotak AMC et al, planning to launch various core-sector funds. And with the sector growing at 8-9% per annum, on the back of the country’s increasing lust for quality infrastructure – ports, highways & airports – the optimism is not unjustified. When contacted, Tridib Pathak, CIO, Lotus India AMC, said, “We are planning for an infrastructure fund in the next 3-4 months, which will invest in a portfolio that is predominantly constituted of equity and equity related instruments of companies involved directly or indirectly in infrastructure creation in the economy.”

No doubt, this is a result of the extraordinary performance of infrastructure stocks in 2006 and in the first seven months of this calendar year. DSP Merrill Lynch, ICICI Prudential and UTI Mutual Fund already have presence in this sector through their respective funds. S. Naren, Senior Vice President & Head of Equities, ICICI Prudential AMC, whose infrastructure fund has registered a CAGR of about 64.52% in the past one year opines, “The growth in the sector itself is behind the fund’s outstanding performance. Infrastructure is acatalyst in growth and is bound to observe a promising trend, which adds to the fund’s performance.”

According to the Economic Survey 2006–07, investments of $320 billion would be required in the infrastructure sector during the 11th Five Year Plan. No doubt, infrastructure has substantial upside potential. Given the importance given to infrastructure creation, with impetus not only from the government, but also from public private partnerships, private entrepreneurial interest and foreign direct investment, the focus on infrastructure development is at an all time high. Companies, involved in this infrastructure creation process, are going to be biggest beneficiaries of the boom. So time to catch the bus on the infrastructure buzz? 4Ps

Truly global Indians... and the list goes on

IIPM - Admission Procedure

As a historic first, in May 2007, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy became the first Indian “outside of HLL” to be inducted into Unilever’s globalboard. But what about other companies? Have they been as merciful? In reality, the examples are plentiful. Gurcharan Das was the CEO, Procter & Gamble India from 1985 onwards. From 1989 till 1992, he was made the Vice- President, P&G Far East. But the most dramatic success that he attained was when he was made the Managing Director, P&G Worldwide in 1992!

More recently, in January 2007, America Online Ltd. (AOL), promoted their India Chief, ManeeshDhir, as AOL’s Global Operations Head. Dhir had excitedly quoted to the media then, “The experience of setting up and developing businesses in India will no doubt help me as AOL enters new and challenging markets globally!” When 4Ps B&M caught up with him this August 2007, Maneesh was ebullient in his emotions, sharing with us, “My growth is reflective of the company’sgrowth and maturity to a more global orientation, not just from a business and opportunity perspective, but also around talent.” Talent from India? It does seem rightly so.

DESCRIPTION: AnBRAND : Aditya Birla Group - Taking India to the world employee is talking about working, expanding within Aditya Birla Group. He says, “I loved my job, I was immersed in aluminium for years, from prices to products. It’s time for a new challenge, to move on, not from the group, just the sector. We get the point - employers can be the best brand ambassadors! The single-minded focus is to flaunt their recent achievement: bagging Best Employer tag in India. “During the last 5 years, the number of Indians in key positions across the globe has definitely increased!”

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

If you thought those were only FMCG and technology companies believing in Indian CEOs, even the world’s largest heavy equipment and infrastructure companies are not to be left behind – June 2007 saw the biggest of them all, ABB, promoting Ravi Uppal, the Country Manager for India, to the top management by making him an Executive Committee member of ABB globally. ABB interestingly promoted Uppal after Dinesh Paliwal, another of their Indian heads, promoted previously to the Executive Committee, had resigned. As confirmed by ABB itself (“Ravi Uppal has been instrumental in ABB’s successful performance in India...”, ABB press release), it was clearly Uppal’s astounding performance for ABB India (sales increased 540% during his six year tenure and ABB India became the top growth market, beating China) that motivated this move by ABB.

Air India -Meet the non-stop…..

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

BRAND: Air India
HEADLINE: Meet the non-stop…..
BASELINE : NA
AGENCY : Inter Publicity

4Ps TAKE : Air India -Meet the non-stop…..When foreign airlines are bragging about their luxurious facilities and cosy miles-high experience on board to long distance travellers, then why should our desi international airline stay quiet? The single-minded focus of this ad is to position Air India as a non-stop and comfortable carrier between Mumbai and New York. The communication clearly targets the business travelers (the numbers, as we know, are increasing with every passing day). Further, the boxes of pictures comprising the various in-flight facilities points to the amenities that can be enjoyed over a long journey by business travellers. The visual is appealing with a close-up shot of an Air India aircraft amidst the clouds (complete with the brand new logo). All said and done, we still miss the adorable, moustachioed Maharaja!

Deutsche Bank - Best Investment Bank-India

IIPM, GURGAON

BRAND: Deutsche Bank
HEADLINE: Best Investment Bank-India
BASELINE : A passion to perform

4Ps TAKE :Deutsche Bank - Best Investment Bank-India The visual is smart and creative – the Deutsche Bank logo on Gateway of India. Now, what could that imply? Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? Celebrating the success of the German bank in India, which also is the power idea. No reams and reams of body copy, but the message is very well conveyed. The reward to the prospect: the fact that Germany’s signature bank has won the 2007 Euro money Award for Excellence. The Indian connection in the Deutsche Bank success story is further enhanced by the communication that features a list of cities it operates in, on the top of the page. The bank’s USP? The investment facilities that have given it an edge over other foreign banks, making it the best investment bank in India. All this, says Deutsche Bank, is because of the brand’s credo of a passion to perform. But hey, the visual of the bank’s logo entering Gateway of India, a proud heritage of the country, is a masterstroke...

The clinching benefit to the brand is, of course, the Japanese connection – ‘Born in Japan’ (we’re talking lineage here, after all!). Shop till you drop

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

Nobody would have betted on India being the world’s number one retail market; it’s a slight change now – Everybody does!

When was the last time you sauntered across the road in front of your house to a Wal-Mart to buy a pair of sneakers? And then ambled a block away to a Target supermall to grab grocery for home? And then scampered a block further to the Macy’s superstore to buy a set of Chanel’s top-line perfumes? Let me guess the answer... Never! But hey, this dreamy vision just might come true, right here in India, where a retail boom is sweeping across with astounding velocity.

The retail industry has been estimated to be around Rs.90,000 crores – which, according to some, seems a very conservative estimate! India seems to represent the most compelling international investment opportunity. According to A.T. Kearney’s 2005 Global Retail Development Index (GRDI) India moved from the second place to the first, displacing Russia as the top hot spot for investing in retail. In 2006 too, India retained its top spot in the index. If things go as planned, then organized retailing in India has the potential of creating over 2 million new (direct) jobs within the next six years.

The market is surely bursting with growth potential, and retailers are queuing up to grab a portion of the retail pie. So while luxury retail chains like Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior & the new entrant Versace have gingerly placed their feet on Indian shores, vast numbers of others are waiting in the wings; in fact, the likes of Gucci, Armani, Jimmy Choo, Tumi Luggege are just starting to unfold their plans. But what’s interesting is that by 2015, India would have over 550 million people under the age of 20, making it a vast playground for kids and teen retailers. No wonder, in India the Walt Disney Company has decided to launch its range of toys, clothing etc designed around the popular Disney show “Power Rangers” in collaboration with Shopper’s Stop, Archies, Funskool etc.

The wonder of it all is that those are not just the foreign brands and chains, but Indian retail chains too, which are gearing up for a huge expansion plan. No one wants to miss the opportunity of growth that India is offering now. If global behemoths like Wal-Mart and Carrefour are planning to come to town, the RPG group – with its Rs.200 crores planned investment and long creditworthy Spencers brand – might be the least of worries they’ll have to face. The biggest headache, a debilitating one in all probability, for these international leaders would definitely be Mukesh Ambani, who plans to invest an eye popping Rs.25,000 crores, and employ a soul stopping one million employees over the next few years on retail. Reliance could well be the Indian Wal-Mart. And I’ve not even started talking about companies like Pantaloon, which have already started consolidating their presence in the retail sector. In fact, even companies like Siyaram – one of the few brands that was able to give Raymonds a run for its money – are planning to introduce retail outlets across the nation. Indian corporations surely seem to be in the know of phenomenal gumption and confidence to fight foreign brands on home-turf. Retail is surely in!

On the food front, while McDonald’s has already invested Rs.800 crores, it plans to invest an additional Rs.300 crores in the next three years and open at least 100 more outlets! While no MNC has been able to stand up to the might of Amul, the company is taking no chances and it too has expansion plans up its sleeve and plans to increase its ice-cream outlets from 60,000 to 80,000 this year. Not to be left behind, Shopper’s Stop has been keeping an eye on the changing food habits of youngsters and is planning to set up food carts, which would give tough competition to the likes of McDonald’s, Pizza Hut & Barista etc.

With almost everyone planning huge expansion plans, what exactly are the various factors that are key to operating a successful retail chain? Especially given the fact that retail is a “people oriented” business, and the way one interacts with customers is of paramount importance – the customer of today is very aware, very discerning; he is more demanding and winning his loyalty is tough – so how do you keep them flocking in?

Location

If there are three things to keep in mind while opening a retail outlet, they would be (1)Location! (2)Location! (3)Location! Yes, that’s how important it is. While there perhaps can be no location better than Oxford Street for a retailer to ensure that people pop in at least once to take a look, Wal-Mart, on the other hand, located itself in small towns – which none of the other big retailers were targeting – and soon became a roaring success. In straightforward terms, the outlet’s location should be within easy distance of the target audience. ITC made its e-chaupals highly successful by locating themselves near their target audience – the villagers who earlier had no shopping opportunities. The corollary is that one needs to understand extremely well the demographic profile of customers residing within the geographical area in consideration. Simply said, open a high-end store in the high-end part of a town; and a low-end one, in the low-end part. Take time to choose the right location. It’s worth it!

Image

In 2002, the Minneapolis–based Target Corporation leapfrogged over all other competitors to become the number two discounter – just a few steps behind the colossal giant – Wal-Mart. Today, its giving Wal-Mart a few lessons in retailing. Target realized there was no point in taking Wal-Mart head-on. It needed to make its own position. So while Wal-Mart had got the price advantage and was perceived as the ‘Everyday Low Prices’ outlet, Target had to build a new image for itself. Target very cautiously started to build an image of ‘Cheap-chic’. Clever partnerships with designers, and creative advertising made it sure that young, better educated and more affluent customers started frequenting Target. The supermarket soon made a name for itself as a happening and fun-place to be. So much so, it made Wal-Mart look old and frumpy. Target became hip and cool.

The image people have about your retail outlet is very important in ensuring customer loyalty. So Big Bazaar is known as a no-frills-discount store. If you are looking for a great buy, then this is the place. Shopper’s Stop, on the other hand, is for the upwardly mobile and trendy. And the fact is that you need to weave your advertising strategy around this image too. Years ago, Bloomingdale’s did this by using the tag line, ‘Like no other store in the world’. It immediately cast an aura around the store and set it apart-so much so that when Queen Elizabeth visited USA, she stopped at Bloomingdale’s!

Supply-chain management

This store made retail history when its founder Kresge started a ‘Five & Dime Store’ and introduced the world to the concept of a discount store. The concept was a super-hit and soon, in just one year, this chain grew to a smashing 63 stores. That was 1963. The same store created history once more when in 2002, it filed for bankruptcy protection. The store was K-Mart.

Both K-Mart and Wal-Mart started in the same year; yet, what is it that caused K-Mart to go bankrupt and Wal-Mart to prosper? In certain terms, tt was the poor supply-chain management of K-Mart, which was the cause for its downfall. Wal-Mart used information technology to keep track of its sales. It knew quickly when to order which product, which product was a best seller, which a loser. It developed a sophisticated hub & spoke supply-chain system, innovating (then) the global usage of bar code tracking, and (even now) RFID tags. K-Mart, on the other hand, relied on quasi-manual systems. As a result, goods were not ordered & delivered on time. Shelves stayed empty. Managers had very less clue on which goods were doing well, and which weren’t. The outdated technology often resulted in goods sitting in trucks parked behind stores, all because there was no storage space. By 1983, while Wal-Mart was spending only 2 cents per dollar in getting goods into stores, K-Mart was spending a pathetic 150% more. No surprise then that Wal-Mart could offer products at prices that were 3% lower than those offered by K-Mart; this soon eroded K-Mart’s customer base substantially.

Shopping experience

The customer is “gold” and should be treated like that. Treating customers with respect and going that extra mile for them, always helps build loyalty. Those are the small touches that ensure that the shopping experience of customers is exhilarating, and that they come back to your store and go nowhere else.

H&M, one of Europe’s most successful fashion chains, takes care that its stores are brightly lit, there is trendy music playing always and the shelves and goods are placed in unobstructed straight lines – all for the benefit and comfort of the shopper. In fact, outside some Japanese malls, one can even find numerous bicycle sheds. There, people cycle a lot and sheds are a convenience being offered to them. If that’s giving a lot, think about this Swedish furniture company, which was ranked 11th, not in terms of its furniture business, but for being one of the best-earning ‘eateries’! Furniture giant Ikea lures customers with cheap warm meals! One out of every 20 euros spent at Ikea goes into its cheap meals menu. It’s not just a hot dog for €1, the company also provides free baby-sitting services, so moms and dads can shop in peace.

Clearly, the customer should not just be well taken care of, but also be provided an environment that astounds their experience pleasurably.

Your employees

Sales are made not so much with low prices as with emotions. Get enthusiastic young turks to manage your shop floor. Their energy and emotions will rub-off on the consumers too. Take care of your employees they in turn will take care of your customers. Have in–store award programs, acknowledge special achievements. Give them responsibilities and reward them frequently.

The Merchandise

While profits of stores like GAP and Marks & Spencer fell, things seemed to be going great for the Spanish retailer Zara. Today, its founder has become one of the richest men in Spain. His policy was straight and simple. People were looking for fashionable things – not necessarily things that would last for ages. So he gave them clothes that were different and fashionable without the hefty price tag, and kept changing the range constantly. The word-of-mouth about Zara’s excellent merchandise kept customers pouring in. In short, select your merchandise carefully. It should be in-sync with the image. Have an assortment of things to meet the needs of the people. Knowing what to keep & what to discard is the key to an expanding customer base.

Retailing is definitely an art. It’s the art of charming your customers. You need to be creative, you have to make them want to own what you have to sell. So put on your thinking hats and rework your retailing strategies. If you want to survive – make them shop till they drop.
