Banking on the valley...

IIPM PUBLICATION

“In the course of the last year, the management of J&K Bank has set in motion a multipronged strategy”

Jammu & Kashmir Bank comes 15th in our ranking, but considering how it has carved a separate space for itself amidst cut-throat competition in the sector, its accomplishment is noteworthy. The vision of M.Y. Khan (former Chairman) who spearheaded J&K Bank’s operations for more than eight years, and contributions of its present Chairman Dr. Haseeb Drabu has helped the bank scale new heights. One look at the J&K Bank website and a glance through the Chairman’s message will bring out the difference in this bank’s vision. While other banks sing paeans about the quality of their banking services, this J&K Bank Chairman’s message instead expresses strong views on the overall national banking and monetary scenario.

Apart from developing new products and an effective risk management system, Dr. Drabu is a strong believer of strong HR practices, which have ultimately translated into a better numbers for J&K Bank. The stock price of this bank is up by 50% over a period of one year and net profits have increased by 100% for FY07.

With over 500 branches, J&K Bank expects growth in FY 2007-08 from enhanced focus on its home state (J&K) market, especially for SMEs and horticulture entrepreneurs. The valley of flowers beckons.

Last year, it opened three stores in India (in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore). And now it plans to open nine more – taking the total number of outlets to 12 – by the end of this year. Business is booming, retail is on an upswing, and demand for fancy accessories is at an alltime high, claims the company. So much so that the Indian market has been accepted as one of its key areas of focus. The price range of Kipling bags starts at Rs.1,500 and goes up to Rs.12,000, and includes hand bags, shoulder bags, purses and travel bags. The company has 140 stores in 54 countries around the world.

Moreover, today’s tomatoes have a regulated ripening in order to increase their shelf life. The advent of golden rice today promises that each grain of rice is more rich in vitamin – things unheard of before in the history of land farming; and showing promise to help the poor and the underfed. Developments like onions sans tears, coffee sans caffeine have hit reality. Furthermore, cows today are injected with Bovine Growth Hormones to produce more milk. Fields at Kansas are getting prepared for the first batch of genetically engineered rice which will contain human genes. And food products from cloned animals are knocking on the doors to enter the food supply chain. It’s not only about genetically modified food; usage of technology has seen concepts like food irradiation that have stormed into our nutritional chain. Today, radiation is used to restore hygiene in the food products. Radiations like X-rays, gamma rays and electron beams are used to disinfect food products like meat & other food products.

Challenges

IIPM PUBLICATION

As players in an emerging biotech market, Spanish companies still have some challenges ahead. The first and most significant one, many observers say, is access to financial resources. Spanish investors are only now beginning to understand the potential of biotechnology and make a long-term commitment. And those same Spanish investors are crucial in getting companies to a place where they will be attractive to international investors.

That’s the position Cellerix, the Genetrix spinoff, has already reached. Genetrix is working on finding partners in Europe, Japan, and the United States. “When you turn to outside venture capitalists, they always want to have a Spanish local investor who takes the lead, and that’s been difficult in the past,” says Claudia Jimenez.

Iberia to go Europe(an)!

IIPM PUBLICATION

As the open-sky agreement was reached between the European Union and the United States last month, the restrictions on North Atlantic travel were eradicated to a great extent. To cash in on the opportunity, the Spanish airlines Iberia Lķneas Aéreas de Espańa – holding 20% air travel market between Europe and Latin America – is keen on striking a deal with a European airline. Taking cue from this, British Airways (BA), on April 23, announced its intentions to increase its stake – as it already holds 10% stake – in Iberia, for which the discussions are ongoing with private equity firms. BA was also in talks with a US buyout firm, TPG, last month, for a $4.6 billion deal.

Dialog with the Red Lion

IIPM PUBLICATION

Today, a holistic approach to reach the consumer’s heart seems to be the need of the hour and considering that all agencies are rolling out offshoots that specialise in respective fields, Publicis too has spread its arms. Launched in 2006, Dialog is the solution that the agency has come up with to give its clients a holistic view as it offers the whole gamut of services from advertising, direct marketing, sales promotion and investor relations to event management, merchandising and much more. “The purpose of Dialog was to convert people to customers and convert marketing from interruptive to connective,”he says. The motive being to focus on realizing customer requirements into noticeable sales results. But, Dialog is not the only one. Red Lion (a design outfit) is Publicis India’s latest creation, and already boasts of big ticket clients like Lakme, Atmosphere, Bisleri club soda and Taj Group of Hotels.

A city ‘of, for & by’ dreams

IIPM PUBLICATION

The city of Dubai defies stereotype. It’s a place where swanky malls jostle for space with traditional ‘Souks’. It’s the place where the harmony of skyscrapers blends with the minarets of mosques. It has made compromises but not at the cost of tradition. Today, McDonald’s and KFCs are commonplace; but the meat that they sell is always ‘Halal’. You shall find glittering showrooms of Marks & Spencer’s but will find that the salespersons get offended if you speak something that’s against their age-old culture. Corporate honchos riding Lamborghinis will pull off their cars and take a bow towards Mecca once the voice of ‘Muaazin’ rises to assert the glory of Allah. A Sheikh might boast of 100-odd servants but when it’s time to break the Ramadan fast, they all sit on the same ‘Dastarkhwan’.

Ouch! It hurts...

IIPM PUBLICATION

But at the same time, it is expected that this rupee appreciation phenomena might not be a long phenomena in the making, as Rajiv Jain, Sr. Consultant, Basix Forex and Financial Services, puts it, “Fundamentally, we are already sitting on a more than 11% overvalued rupee, which is beyond central bank’s historical tolerance level, and our trade deficit is growing every quarter; so ideally, we should witness a large upside correction sooner than later.” But such a correction can occur only if the RBI endeavours to interfere in the foreign exchange market, and that too in a gargantuan manner; especially given the fact that neither our oil import bill, other imports, nor RBI’s past relatively smaller interventions have had the required effect. So what can India Inc. expect in the near future? Would the RBI control the rupee appreciation, and that too at the cost of allowing inflation to grow further? Well, if you belong to this school of thought, we’d recommend that you quickly choose your favourite road... and take a walk :-)

The dark alleys!

IIPM PUBLICATION

Brihan-Mumbai Electric Supply and Transportation Undertaking (BEST) of- ficials are openly expressing their exuberance over the reduced demand of electricity at least in Mumbai. This year BEST has demanded 2,700 MW power, taking into account a shortfall of 500 MW per day. The gravity of the paucity is gauged from the fact that the state of Maharashtra faces electricity shortage to the tune of 5,700 MW. No wonder, with such outrageous shortfall, the farmers in the state are driven to suicide.

If we take the capital city of Delhi into account, it is believed that annually the demand increases by 350-400 MW. The government & the power distribution companies keep harping about the enormous shortage of power. However, a closer look at the electricity management reveals that there is enough power to feed the capital. This is clearly evident from the fact that for kilometres the high-wattage halogen street-lights remain on during most of the day & ludicrously get extinguished as the night begins to fall.

The dry, dry sahara!

IIPM BUSINESS & ECONOMY

After the acrimony that reverberated in the media throughout 2006-07, Naresh Goyal raised many eyebrows when he accepted Sahara’s hand in marriage yet again! Surely, only a few could see it coming, after the unceremonious break-up & bitter legal proceedings following an equally hasty affair – one that finally forced Naresh to accept the cursed ring, and an expensive one at that!

As Surbhi Chawla, Aviation Analyst, Angel Trade reveals exclusively to B&E, “Yes, it is a more of a compromise... the overall competitive environment hasn’t improved since last one year when the deal was first announced.” Certainly, Jet seems to have understood that instead of paying Rs.5 billion for nothing, they could shell out (a lot) more and get at least the limited brand equity, some parking bays & the biggest loss-making domestic airline in India. Binit Somaia, Regional Director, Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation (CAPA), spoke to B&E, “If one was to start with a clean sheet today, it is unlikely that Jet Airways would be interested in acquiring Air Sahara... Given the history of last year, the alternative to this latest deal could possibly have been even more costly. But Air Sahara is making signifi cant losses, likely the highest in India...”

As the front runner in India’s real estate development, what more could one expect?

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL

And a broker who did not wish to be quoted told B&E that the going grey market price for the share was Rs.900, according to which this worth would shoot up even further to a mind boggling $31.3 billion. It is no wonder, therefore, that speculators feel that the DLF IPO would propel K. P. Singh to the topmost ranks of the world’s richest.

Of course, some things can be too good to be true, and DLF faces this very quagmire currently. For K. P. Singh, the adage, “Wait for the right time and you will have to wait forever” seems to be quite apt. SEBI is still investigating the charges by minority shareholders against DLF. And there is another issue that has cropped up recently; SEBI seems adamant to come down heavily on real estate companies that state their land valuations on futures in their red herring prospectus, which could affect DLF as well. And to top it all, while the minority shareholders issue spoilt the party last year; this time around, it seems that the entire real estate market seems to be catching cold feet.

The Krypton Dilemma

IIPM PUBLICATION

It is quite despicable that in 60 years since Independence, successive governments have criminally failed to provide even basic healthcare services to the masses. While almost 80% of India lives on less than $2/day (UNDP data), for the ‘rich’ rest, the private sector provides world-class healthcare solutions, coveted now even by foreigners... A sector update!

Krypton was where their son was born; the planet that his parents assumed would protect their newborn child, nurture him, and make him live a fulfilling life. Ironically, Krypton was the very planet that not only consumed all of its citizens in an explosive finale of self-destruction, but also forced the child’s parents to pack him off in a spaceship as a last ditch effort to save their only child, before dying themselves. The child escaped, and grew up in an alien planet – Earth, in this case. Ironically, it was here that he became Superman, an invincible hero with super powers, whose only nemesis remained Kryptonite, the remnants of his home planet, exposure to which could kill him instantaneously.

They say fiction mirrors reality more than one could believe. A billion plus Indians would stand evidence for the same, living a life worse than fiction on a daily basis, what with their own home country’s ‘Kryptonite-laden’ successive governments – who were supposed to protect them and nurture them to become global superheroes driving our economy to fantastic heights – providing a majority of them shameful and most dismal packages of healthcare services.

Que: Does the sub-prime mortgage meltdown underway have the potential of bringing down the U.S. economy? (Alan Marshall, Plymouth, Mich.)

MANAGEMENT GURU

Ans:
Meltdown is a good word for the unfolding sub-prime mortgage mess, but the answer to your question is still “No.” This is not the savings and loan disaster of 1989, which helped send the U.S. economy into a recession. Today’s economy is so much more broad based and global, and its financial markets so much more liquid, that it can handle this relatively small problem without serious long-term damage. Of course the problem doesn’t feel small to the people living it. Thousands of families are being forced to move out and unload their properties. And in the companies that made the sub-prime loans, employees are facing layoff s in a weakened industry. Even with those disheartening stories, it’s important to recognise that sub-prime mortgage business is just a small percentage of a $15 trillion economy. Indeed, you can already see the economy’s overall resiliency and liquidity in the activities of several investment companies, such as Goldman Sachs, that are buying up portfolios of sub-prime loans at distressed prices.

We’re not saying the sub-prime crisis should be pooh-poohed. But even with its spillover effects it won’t kill the economy. Think big blip, not blowout.

Etihad flying on a bidding ride

MANAGEMENT GURU

Etihad Airways, a UAE-based airline devises to invite aircraft makers Airbus and Boeing to bid a call for single and twin-aisle aircraft in forthcoming year. As Abu Dhabi government plans to expand its network in Middle East and other nations like India, Etihad had an eye on new long range aircraft s including Airbus’s new A350 and Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. Etihad, which has 25 aircraft s under its net, intends to add routes to growing markets like India, specifically to high potential destinations like Calcutta and Bangalore. Etihad estimates its revenues to rise 60%, boosting sales to $1.25 billion this year. This can be due to its expansion scheme as compared to that of 0.78 billion last year while managing 2.83 million passengers.

The Flip Side

MANAGEMENT GURU

The Indian textile sector looks well on its way to create a strong foothold in the global arena, but there are quite a few bottlenecks, which are adequate enough to lead to a doom for the loom. Even today, the so-called Indian labour welfare policies are so complicated that the dragon nation is stealing the show by attracting much higher FDI into its textile sector. Moreover, Man Made Fibre (MMF), which dominates the total textile consumption of the world, is also subject to a high import duty of 10%. With definite conviction, if the duty is removed, the exports are bound to surge northwards. The government should also inject investment in veins of the industry by extending the TUF Scheme beyond March 2007, so that the Indian textile industry gets into a strong position to face the growing competition. “The industry has just started meeting global challenges and we need more funds for technical upgradation,” supports C. L. Rathi, MD, Birla VXL Ltd.

The need of the hour is to rationalize the government policies and further enhance co-ordination with the industry. This will greatly assist the Indian textile companies in their hunt for the golden treasure trove. With proper direction from the policy front, India can establish a fanatically flamboyant brand identity for itself across the planet. So it’s high time to get all hands on deck and get the Indian textile ship moving on an odyssey towards global dominance.

Move with the herd? Or just walk alone?...

IIPM PUBLICATION

Que:
I’ve worked for five years at a very successful company and many exciting challenges lie ahead. But I know that independent contractors employed by my department earn a lot more than I do – in some cases, almost triple. So, I find myself at a crossroads: Should I go out on my own as a “hired gun” or stick it out as a company man? (Name withheld, Dublin, Ireland)

Ans: You hail from one of world’s most robust economies, but your question is universal. It’s the “it” career question of our times – and not just for newly minted college grads or MBAs.

Virtually every businessperson with some form of marketable expertise now has the opportunity to outsource those skills to the growing number of employers attracted by the flexibility of hiring people without “chains.” Indeed, as one such employer told us recently, “Independent contractors make my life so easy. I don’t have to pay their benefits, write their appraisals or manage their neuroses.” Best of all, she added, “If things don’t work out, I don’t have to roll in the muck with HR or legal. I just have to say, ‘So long’.

Of Chocolates and Teddy Bears

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

If legend were to be believed, then Saint Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome. At that time, Emperor Claudius II wanted more and more men to join his army; and figured out that single men made better soldiers. So he outlawed marriage. Valentine decided to help these young souls and began performing marriages for young lovers in secret. Valentine was caught and put in jail by the king. It was in the jail that the first ‘Valentine’ message was sent by him to the jailor’s daughter, with whom he fell in love. Before his death, he wrote her a letter and signed as “from your Valentine.”

That one letter has today turned into an avalanche of letters. If statistics are to be believed, then half of the US population celebrates Valentine’s Day by purchasing at least one greeting card. Who knew V’day would become the second largest holiday (after Christmas) for giving greeting cards; after all, giving a card is so much easier than writing letters, since there is now a card for every feeling and emotion...
